What are AI search optimization tools? A comparison of trackers, prices and limits
What are AI search optimization tools? They are trackers and advisors that show how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand, and what to fix. Entry plans with published prices ran from $29 to $199 a month on 30 September 2026, and Google and Bing now report AI visibility free. This guide compares them and gives you a weekly tracking method.

The short version
- They sample AI answers and count your brand. Trackers run fixed prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI features and report mentions, citations and share of voice. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
- Entry prices run $29 to $199 a month. Otterly.AI Lite is $29 for 15 prompts, Peec AI $95 for 50, Semrush $99 for 25 and Ahrefs Brand Radar AI from $199 for one platform, $699 for all (vendor pricing pages, 30 September 2026). Profound publishes no brand price.
- Start with the free reports. Google Search Console's generative AI report (all sites since 31 August 2026) and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report show your AI impressions and citations, and ChatGPT tags referrals with utm_source=chatgpt.com.
- Measure mention rate, not rank. SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai found ChatGPT and Google's AI returned the same brand list for the same prompt less than once in 100 runs.
- Run a weekly panel. Freeze 30 to 50 buyer prompts, run each several times per engine, log one scorecard row a week and judge the four-week trend.
What are AI search optimization tools, and what do they actually do?
AI search optimization tools are software that measures and helps improve how often AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand. Most work by sending a fixed set of prompts to each engine on a schedule, storing the answers, and counting mentions, citations and competitor appearances. Some add content advice or crawler checks. None can see inside the engines.
The click is shrinking. In Pew Research Center's study of 900 US adults' March 2025 browsing data, people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% for people who did not see one, and they clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits.5 If the answer is where the decision happens, you need to know whether your name is in it.
The category goes by several names (AI visibility tools, LLM visibility tracking, GEO tools). What matters is which job a product does, how many prompts it runs, on which engines, and how often. Know Google's position before you buy: it says optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO".1 For where AI search fits in a wider plan, see our guide to using AI in marketing.
Types of tools: tracking, content and technical
AI search tools fall into three groups, and most paid platforms bundle two or three with tracking at the core. Tracking tools run prompts and report mentions, citations and share of voice. Content tools suggest or draft changes to pages that engines cite, or show which sources name competitors but not you. Technical tools check whether AI crawlers can reach your site and log how often they visit.
Tracking
A tracker holds a list of prompts (the questions your buyers ask), runs them against chosen engines daily or weekly, and parses each answer. Ahrefs defines the core metrics this way: mentions (how often your brand name appears in answer text), citations (how often the engine links to your pages) and AI share of voice (the percentage of answers in your topic set that mention or cite you versus competitors).9 Custom prompts are questions you write and pay for per prompt. Pre-built indexes, such as Ahrefs Brand Radar's, run prompts derived from search data so you can benchmark any brand without setup.9
Content
Content features range from gap reports to drafting agents. Peec AI's gap analysis lists sources that name competitors but not you.11 Ahrefs sells a Content Kit from $99 a month, and Profound's AI Marketer drafts with your brand context.810 Treat outputs as drafts. Google says creating content for every fan-out query variation, primarily to manipulate its AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy.1
Technical
Technical features ask whether engines can read you. Peec AI's crawlability audit checks which of 40-plus AI bots your robots.txt allows or blocks.11 Profound's Agent Analytics tracks AI-sourced traffic through integrations such as Cloudflare and Vercel.10 Semrush includes an AI readiness site audit.7 The check that matters most for ChatGPT is free: OpenAI says sites must not block OAI-SearchBot if they want to appear in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets.4
AI visibility tools compared: price, prompts and engines
Among dedicated trackers with a published price, entry plans run from $29 a month (Otterly.AI Lite, 15 prompts) to $199 a month (Ahrefs Brand Radar AI, one platform; its prompt packs start at $50), with Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 for 25 prompts and Peec AI at $95 for 50. Profound publishes no brand price beyond a free trial. Google and Bing report your own site's AI visibility free. Prices are list prices fetched on 30 September 2026.
| Tool | Entry price | Prompts at entry | Engines at entry | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29 (Lite); $189 for 100 prompts | 15 | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot; AI Mode, Gemini, Claude as add-ons | Small teams testing the category cheaply |
| Peec AI | $95 (Starter) | 50, each on 3 models you pick | Choose 3 of ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini, Naver AI | Marketing teams wanting daily data and competitor gaps |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 per domain; no free trial | 25 | Mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity | Teams already inside Semrush for SEO |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | $199 (Brand Radar AI, one index); prompt packs from $50 | Index of pre-built prompts; own prompts by pack or plan (Lite at $129 includes 5) | One AI platform index at $199; all platforms $699 | Benchmarking known brands and competitors without setup |
| Profound | No published brand price; free 7-day trial; Enterprise quoted | 50 fixed prompts on trial; custom on Enterprise | Trial: ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews; Enterprise up to 9 engines | Larger brands needing many engines and custom prompts |
| Google Search Console | Free | Not prompt based | AI Overviews and AI Mode (your site's impressions) | Everyone with a verified site |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Free (public preview) | Not prompt based | Copilot, Bing AI summaries, select partners (your site's citations) | Everyone with a verified site |
Row sources: each vendor's pricing page, plus Google's and Bing's report announcements.121178102313 Vendors change prices often, so check the page on the day you buy. The more useful unit is price per tracked prompt.
| Plan | Monthly price | Prompts | Per prompt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs custom prompt pack, Basic (80 prompts daily on 1 platform) | $50 | 80 | $0.63 |
| Peec AI Starter (3 models) | $95 | 50 | $1.90 |
| Otterly.AI Lite (4 engines) | $29 | 15 | $1.93 |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 | 25 | $3.96 |
Read the chart as a floor. Ahrefs' $0.63 covers one platform, so three engines need about three times the checks. Peec AI shows the arithmetic plainly: 50 prompts on 3 models daily is 4,500 answers a month.11
How do you track brand visibility in ChatGPT and Google for free?
Three free sources cover more than most teams expect. Google Search Console's generative AI performance report shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, with the grounding queries behind them. ChatGPT tags its referral links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so your analytics can count ChatGPT visits; none of the three names a competitor.
- Google Search Console. Google launched the generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026 and rolled them out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. It lists impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover.2 The announced fields include no query dimension, so it shows which pages appear, not for which questions.
- Bing Webmaster Tools. Microsoft's AI Performance dashboard, in public preview since 10 February 2026, reports total citations, cited pages, page-level counts and grounding queries (the phrases the AI used to retrieve your content). Grounding queries are a sample, and citations do not indicate placement.3 A preview since 16 June 2026 adds Citation Share, your percentage of all citations for a grounding query, without naming who holds the rest.13
- Your analytics. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, and that publishers who allow OAI-SearchBot can track that traffic in tools such as Google Analytics.4
So "what tools track whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?" has a two-part answer. For clicks, your analytics already does it. For mentions without a click, you need a prompt tracker, because referral tracking only sees visits.
A weekly AI visibility tracking method you can run yourself
Build a fixed set of 30 to 50 buyer prompts, run each several times on each engine every week, and record the share of runs that mention you, cite you and name each competitor. Add the free Google, Bing and analytics numbers, then judge the four-week trend, not any single day. Repeat runs matter because ChatGPT and Google's AI returned the same brand list less than once in 100 runs in SparkToro's research.
The prompt and run counts below are our suggested starting points, not benchmarks. The reason for repeat runs is sourced: in SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai's study, volunteers ran 12 prompts 60 to 100 times each, and the same list in the same order came up less than once in 1,000 runs. Across 994 answers to 142 people's differently worded headphone prompts, the leading brands still appeared 55% to 77% of the time.6 Rank is noise; mention rate is signal.
| Step | When | What you do | Data source | What you record |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build the prompt set | Once, review quarterly | Write 30 to 50 prompts across four intents: category, comparison, problem and brand | Sales calls, support tickets, Bing grounding queries | A fixed, numbered list |
| 2. Run the prompts | Same day each week | Run each prompt 3 times on each engine your buyers use | A tracker, or manual runs | Every answer, dated |
| 3. Score each answer | Same day | Mark: mentioned, cited, competitors named, wrong facts | Stored answers | Yes or no per field |
| 4. Pull first-party data | Same day | Export AI impressions, citations, grounding queries and ChatGPT sessions | Search Console, Bing, analytics (utm_source=chatgpt.com) | Weekly totals per page |
| 5. Compute the scorecard | Same day | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice per engine | Steps 3 and 4 | One row per week |
| 6. Act and annotate | Following week | Fix wrong facts at the source, improve weak pages, log every change | Your change log | Date and page changed |
The scorecard needs three formulas:
- Mention rate equals answers that name you divided by all answers, per engine. With 40 prompts, 3 runs and 3 engines, that is 360 answers a week, 120 per engine, so one odd answer moves each engine's rate by under 1 point (1 in 120).
- Citation rate equals answers that link to your domain divided by all answers.
- Share of voice equals your mentions divided by all brand mentions, yours plus named competitors'.
Freeze the prompt set between quarterly reviews, or you measure your edits instead of the engines. And treat it as a panel, not a census: when 142 people each wrote a prompt for the same need, their prompts had a semantic similarity of just 0.081.6
Which AI visibility tool is best, and how do you choose?
No single tool is best; the fit depends on engines, prompt volume and the SEO stack you already pay for. Start with the free Google and Bing reports, add a low-cost tracker for 15 to 50 prompts to test the category, and prefer Semrush or Ahrefs if your team already works in one.
- List the engines your buyers use. Entry plans cover different sets, and some charge extra for AI Mode or Gemini (see the table).
- Count prompts, then multiply by engines and runs. Check whether a plan counts a prompt once or once per engine.
- Ask how the vendor handles variance. Does it run each prompt more than once? Does it report mention rate or a single "rank"? The SparkToro authors' advice was to make any provider show their math before you spend on tracking.6
- Check what the numbers are built on. Custom prompts reflect your buyers. Pre-built indexes reflect search demand, which Ahrefs says makes them weaker for brands with little search volume.9
- Test exports and trials. Semrush's toolkit has no free trial; Profound's trial runs 50 fixed, uneditable prompts for 7 days.710 If you cannot export raw answers, you cannot audit the scores.
| Your situation | Reasonable starting setup |
|---|---|
| No budget yet, one site | Search Console and Bing reports, analytics filter for ChatGPT, manual weekly runs of 10 to 15 prompts |
| Small team testing the category | Free reports plus an entry tracker at $29 to $99 a month |
| SEO team already on Semrush or Ahrefs | That vendor's AI module first, so rankings and AI data sit together |
| Several brands, countries or engines | Higher Peec AI or Otterly.AI tiers, or an enterprise quote, compared on price per answer |
The tool only measures. Content and reputation move the numbers, which is where content marketing and other AI marketing use cases come in.
What AI search optimization tools can't do
AI search optimization tools sample answers; they do not see how engines decide. They cannot guarantee citations, reproduce personalized answers, show a stable rank when answers change run to run, or value a mention that never produces a click. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
- No view inside the engines. Google warns against tools that promise ranking success or claim to use internal Google metrics.1
- No stable rank. Brand lists change from run to run (see the weekly method above), so a daily position number mostly measures chance.6
- They cannot replicate your buyer's session. Trackers run standard prompts, and SparkToro left open whether API calls vary the way typed prompts do. The authors, working with a tracking vendor, say they are not professional researchers.6
- Hacks do not become fixes. Google says you do not need llms.txt files, content chunking or special schema for its AI features, though an llms.txt file is fine for other services.1
- They cannot tie mentions to revenue on their own. Only 1% of visits with a Google AI summary included a click on a link in it.5 So pair visibility data with branded search, direct traffic and sales-call notes.
To judge which engines matter to your audience, our comparison of the major language models explains how they differ. When you want tracking, content fixes and technical checks run as one program, our generative engine optimization team runs repeatable prompt tests across the major assistants and reports share of citation against competitors.
