25 mobile app ideas worth building, with costs and revenue models
The mobile app ideas for 2027 most likely to make money are narrow tools for a specific group of people: private AI features that run on the phone, health apps built on wearable data, fintech that helps people manage thin cash cushions, and niche marketplaces. Below are 25, each with core features, a build cost tier from $30,000 to $500,000 or more, and the monetization model that fits. Use the MVP approach to test one before you fund the full build.

The short version
- Pick a narrow job, not a category. Non-game in-app purchase revenue grew 21 percent in 2025 inside a $167 billion market (Sensor Tower). In our view, the best odds sit with tools that solve one recurring problem well.
- On-device AI changes the economics. Apple's on-device model runs offline with free inference, and Android's ML Kit GenAI APIs add no server cost per call (Apple, Google), so we place most AI ideas in the mid cost tier (our judgment, since the cost guide lists AI among complex-tier traits).
- Most first releases cost $30,000 to $200,000. Complex ideas, which in our judgment include the ones that move money or carry clinical data, reach $200,000 to $500,000 or more (Resourcifi cost guide tiers); Clutch's average mobile project is $90,780 over about 11 months.
- Validate before you build. CB Insights found poor product-market fit behind 43 percent of the 385 shut-down VC-backed startups whose failure reasons could be identified, from 431 it tracked (March 2026). Interviews, a smoke test and a one-screen prototype cost weeks, not a build budget.
- Small developers pay lower store fees. Apple charges 15 percent under its Small Business Program, and Google Play in the US charges 10 percent plus a 5 percent billing fee on the first $1 million of subscriptions.
How we picked these mobile app ideas
We kept an idea only if it passed three tests: people already pay for something like it (Sensor Tower counts $167 billion of in-app purchase spending in 2025), a platform shift in the last two years makes a better version possible now, and a small team can ship a first release inside one of the three cost tiers in our own cost guide. Every idea below names its core features, its likely tier and the way it earns money.
Most lists of app ideas are lists of categories. "A fitness app" is not an idea; "a workout builder that turns a coach's written plan into a structured routine, on the phone, with no server bill for the AI" is. The 25 below are written at that second level so you can argue with them, price them and test them.
Three shifts shaped the list:
- On-device AI became free to call. Apple's Foundation Models framework, released with iOS 26, lets apps use the 3 billion parameter model on the phone, offline, with inference that Apple describes as free of cost4. On Android, the ML Kit GenAI APIs process input, inference and output locally with no additional server cost per call5. An AI feature no longer has to carry a per-request cloud bill.
- People pay for apps more than ever, and non-game apps grow fastest. Non-game in-app purchase revenue climbed 21 percent in 2025 and is nearly three times what it was five years earlier3. Generative AI apps doubled downloads to 3.8 billion and passed $5 billion in in-app purchase revenue.
- Store fees for small developers are lower than the headline rate. Apple charges 15 percent to developers new to the App Store or under $1 million in prior-year proceeds6. In the US, Google Play charges 10 percent plus a 5 percent billing fee on the first $1 million of subscription earnings from June 30, 20267.
What we left out: another general chatbot, another social network, crypto trading (Sensor Tower reports a substantive decline in investing and cryptocurrency app downloads in 2025), and anything whose only moat is being first. What we favoured: narrow audiences with a painful, recurring job, where the phone's sensors, camera or on-device model do something a website cannot. That last point matters at review time too. Apple's guideline 4.2 asks that an app offer features and interface that go beyond a repackaged website8.
All 25 mobile app ideas at a glance
Seventeen of the 25 ideas fit a mid-tier first release of $75,000 to $200,000, three fit the simple tier of $30,000 to $75,000, and five need the complex tier of $200,000 to $500,000 or more because they move money, touch credit or carry clinical data. The ranges come from our mobile app cost guide; the tier for each idea is our judgment, and scope decides the real number.

Two patterns stand out. We placed most of the AI ideas in the mid tier, and that is our editorial judgment rather than the cost guide's rule: the guide lists AI among the traits of the complex tier. Our reasoning is that these ideas call the model already on the phone for one narrow task, with no model to train or host, so their other features set the budget. The complex ideas are the ones that move money, touch credit or carry clinical data: bank links, payments between strangers, clinician workflows. Those carry security and compliance work that no framework removes.
AI app ideas
The AI app ideas worth building are narrow tools that use the model already on the phone for summarizing, extracting, describing images or turning speech into structure. Apple's on-device model runs offline with free inference, and Android's ML Kit GenAI APIs keep data local with no server cost per call, so a small app can offer AI features with privacy as a selling point and no per-user inference bill.
The catch is coverage. Google lists the feature-specific GenAI APIs as available on a limited list of recent Android devices from makers such as Google, Samsung, Motorola and Xiaomi, with plans to expand5. Plan a fallback (a cloud call, or a simpler non-AI path) for everyone else, and budget for it.
1. Private journaling coach
A journal that reads your recent entries and writes a better next prompt, then gives you a weekly summary of what came up. Apple highlighted a journaling app doing exactly this with its on-device model, which tells you the pattern works on the platform4. The differentiator is that nothing leaves the phone. Features: prompts, mood tags, search, a weekly digest, export. This is a simple-tier build on one platform. Monetization is a subscription, which Apple allows when the app provides ongoing value and the period is at least seven days8.
2. Voice-to-job capture for trades
Plumbers, electricians and cleaners finish a job with dirty hands and no time to type. The app listens to a 30-second voice note, turns it into a job record with parts used, time on site and follow-ups, and drafts the invoice. Apple showcased a task app that turns spoken thoughts and handwritten notes into organized tasks; this is the trade version with a back office attached. Mid tier, because the job list and invoice need a backend and both platforms. Sell per seat to small contractors.
3. Receipt and expense extractor
Photograph a receipt, and the app pulls merchant, date, tax and total on the device, tags a category, and exports to the accounting tool the user already has. Freelancers and small teams are the market. The build is mid tier because the value lives in integrations and export formats, not in the capture screen. A free tier with a monthly cap and a paid tier for unlimited scans and exports is the natural model.
4. Adaptive study tutor
Pick one subject and one exam. The tutor explains a term at the learner's level, quizzes them, and adjusts. Apple's showcase included a science app that gives conversational explanations adapted to what the learner knows. Content quality is the hard part, not the AI, so budget for subject experts to review question banks. Progress tracking across both platforms puts it in the mid tier, and a consumer subscription can carry it while school or tutoring-centre licences open a second channel. Our step-by-step guide to building an app covers how to scope a first release like this one.
5. Private meeting note summarizer
Therapists, lawyers and financial planners record client conversations but cannot send audio to a third-party cloud casually. An app that transcribes and summarizes on the device, then produces action items, solves a real compliance headache. Google lists speech recognition and summarization among its on-device GenAI APIs. We would price it as a mid-tier build and sell it as a subscription per professional, and the sale depends on a clear, written data-handling policy.
6. Part and model identifier for repair
Point the camera at a dishwasher panel or a bike derailleur, and the app identifies the model, pulls the manual and links to the part. The image description API gives you a start, but the real asset is your catalogue of models and parts, which you will build or license. That catalogue work is what puts it in the mid tier, and it also pays for itself through parts affiliate fees from consumers or a licence sold to a parts distributor or repair network.
7. Visual assistant for low-vision users
Describe a scene, read a medicine label, sort the mail. Image description running locally means private documents stay private. This category rewards careful accessibility design and testing with real users far more than model tuning. Mid tier. Monetization is harder: freemium works for power features, and sponsorship or grant funding from vision charities or insurers can carry the free tier.
Health and fitness app ideas
The strongest health and fitness app ideas connect to data people already collect on a watch, ring or phone, through Apple HealthKit or Android Health Connect, and turn it into a specific decision: train or rest, take the medication, do the exercise. The build is usually mid tier, and the compliance line is the real design constraint, because health data carries rules for sharing, advertising and accuracy claims.

Three rules shape every idea in this section. The FTC's Health Breach Notification Rule covers health apps and fitness trackers that are not covered by HIPAA, treats sharing health data without the user's authorization as a breach, and carries civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation9. Apple forbids using or disclosing data from HealthKit and its motion and fitness APIs for advertising, marketing or other data mining, other than improving health management or health research, and then only with permission8. And Apple will reject an app whose health measurement accuracy it cannot validate. Design for all three from the first sprint; they are cheap to respect early and expensive to retrofit.
8. Coach-plan workout builder
Personal trainers send plans as text messages and PDFs. This app takes that text and turns it into a structured routine with sets, reps, rest timers and a summary after each session. Apple featured a fitness app doing this conversion with its on-device model4, so the core is proven; your angle is the trainer side (client roster, plan sharing, check-ins). Simple tier for the athlete app alone. Subscription for athletes, or a per-client fee paid by trainers. Our fitness app development guide goes deeper on features.
9. Wearable recovery dashboard
The data is already there: Health Connect on Android stores heart rate, step count, sleep sessions and exercise records with the user's permission, and HealthKit does the same job on iPhone. What is missing, in our view, is a plain answer to what a recreational athlete should do today. Pull data from HealthKit on iPhone and Health Connect on Android, combine it with the planned training load, and show one recommendation. Clutch lists compatibility with wearable devices among the features that raise build cost2, so expect the mid tier, and charge a subscription, because the recommendation is new every morning.
10. Family caregiver coordinator
Adult children coordinating care for a parent share medication times, appointments and "did Mom eat today" through group chats. A shared schedule, a care log, reminders and missed-dose alerts to the right sibling is a clear, recurring job. Mid tier. A family subscription with one payer and several members fits how the problem is shared.
11. Home physical therapy companion
A clinician prescribes exercises; the patient follows videos at home while the camera counts reps and checks range of motion; the clinician sees adherence. This is a complex-tier build with a clinical buyer, patient data flowing between organizations, and a HIPAA review once clinics are the customer, since the FTC rule above is written for apps that HIPAA does not cover. Do not make accuracy claims you cannot back with data. Sell a licence to clinics, not a consumer subscription.
12. Private symptom and cycle tracker
People tracking menopause, migraines or cycles want pattern detection and a clean export for their doctor, and many no longer trust apps that share data. Store entries locally first, encrypt any sync, and say plainly what never leaves the device. Under the FTC rule, sharing that data without the user's authorization counts as a breach, so the promise carries legal weight as well as selling power. Encrypted sync and the doctor export push it to the mid tier, and users who value privacy tend to accept a subscription over ads.
13. Workplace activity challenges
Employers want wellness programmes people actually use. Team step and activity challenges with wearable sync, privacy-safe leaderboards and admin reports are a straightforward B2B product. Mid tier because of the admin console and integrations. Price per employee per month, sold to HR teams.
Fintech app ideas
The fintech app ideas with real demand help people manage thin cash cushions and growing obligations. The Federal Reserve's 2025 household survey found 63 percent of adults would cover a $400 emergency expense exclusively with cash, savings or a credit card paid off at the next statement, so 37 percent would not cover it that way, and 16 percent used buy now, pay later. Apps that move money or touch credit sit in the complex tier; apps that only organize information can stay mid.
The split matters for your budget and your timeline. An app that reads information and reminds people can launch fast. An app that holds money, moves money or reports to credit bureaus needs a regulated partner, identity checks and security reviews before it goes near a store. Sensor Tower saw credit and lending app downloads climb 18 percent in 2025 while investing and cryptocurrency apps declined3, which points toward everyday money management rather than trading.
14. Emergency fund builder
Set a goal of $400, then $1,000, then one month of expenses, and let the app move small amounts automatically on payday. The Federal Reserve numbers above are the market10. Bank linking and money movement through a regulated partner put this in the complex tier. Revenue is a small subscription or a revenue share with the partner bank that holds the deposits.
15. BNPL and bill due-date tracker
One in six adults used buy now, pay later in 2025, often across several providers with different schedules. An app that gathers every installment, subscription and bill into one calendar, sends reminders before due dates and shows the total owed this month is useful without moving any money. Pulling in many providers and bills puts it in the mid tier, and freemium fits, with household sharing and extra alerts as the paid features.
16. Freelancer tax set-aside
Freelancers get paid irregularly and forget to hold back tax. Tag incoming payments, apply a set-aside rule, and show the amount that is safe to spend. Add simple invoicing and an export for the accountant. The payment integrations make it mid tier; a modest subscription priced for sole traders fits a job that recurs every time money comes in.
17. Household bill splitter
Roommates and couples split rent, utilities and groceries in spreadsheets. A shared ledger with recurring bills and a settle-up screen that hands off to existing payment apps keeps this in the simple tier, because the app never holds funds. Freemium, with premium for multiple households and receipt capture.
18. Credit-builder coach
Explain what moves a credit score, build a payment plan and match users to credit-builder products from partners. Education alone is easy; anything involving lending, bureau reporting or credit offers brings lending and advertising rules, so this is complex tier. Subscription or referral fees from partners, disclosed clearly. Our note on app monetization strategies compares these models in depth.
19. Small-business cash flow forecaster
Owners of small businesses check their bank balance on their phone and guess. Sync the accounting system, project the next 13 weeks and alert when a gap is coming. The accounting integration sets the mid-tier budget, and a subscription priced per company pays for it, with accountants as a natural referral channel.
Commerce and marketplace ideas
Commerce app ideas work best when they serve a niche the big marketplaces handle badly. US e-commerce reached $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, 17.1 percent of all retail sales and up 12.2 percent on a year earlier, per the Census Bureau. On the App Store, physical goods and services must be paid for outside in-app purchase, so a marketplace's commission does not pass through Apple's in-app purchase system.
That payment rule is Apple guideline 3.1.3(e): goods or services consumed outside the app must use methods such as Apple Pay or card entry, not in-app purchase8. The flip side is that general retail apps are not an easy market. Sensor Tower reports global retail app downloads and time spent declined in 2025 as the largest cross-border discount apps slowed3. Pick a vertical and own it, in a market where online already takes 17.1 percent of US retail11.
20. Single-vertical services marketplace
Appliance repair, piano tuning, dog grooming at home: pick one service and do booking, pro profiles, quotes, payment and reviews better than a general directory. Two-sided marketplaces with payments between strangers are complex tier. Take a commission per completed job. Our guide to building an on-demand app covers the dispatch and payment design.
21. Niche resale app
Kids' gear, climbing equipment, sewing machines. Resale buyers in a niche care about condition grading and fit, which general marketplaces ignore. Photo listing with guided condition checks, a price guide from past sales and prepaid shipping labels make the core. Shipping and listing tools keep it in the mid tier, and a commission on each sale plus paid listing boosts lets revenue grow with volume.
22. Ordering app for independent kitchens
Sensor Tower counted 14 percent growth for restaurant and food delivery apps in 2025. Independent restaurants, bakeries and meal-prep kitchens want direct orders without handing a large share to a delivery platform. A white-label ordering app with menus, pickup slots, loyalty and card payments is mid tier. Charge each kitchen a monthly SaaS fee.
23. Shoppable video storefront
Small brands already make short product videos for social media. Give them an app storefront where each video carries tagged products and a two-tap checkout. Push notifications and a shopping cart are both features Clutch lists as raising build cost2, so plan for the mid tier and a monthly merchant subscription priced against the sales the storefront brings in.
24. B2B reorder app for wholesale buyers
Restaurants, salons and clinics reorder the same supplies every week by phone or email. A supplier-branded app with saved order lists, account-specific pricing and one-tap reorder cuts order errors and phone time. Mid tier because of the ERP or inventory integration. Charge the supplier a SaaS fee.
25. Equipment rental marketplace
Tools, cameras, camping gear and party equipment sit unused most of the year. Peer or shop-to-customer rentals need listings, calendars, deposits, identity checks and a damage-claims process. Trust and protection are the product, which makes this complex tier. Commission plus a protection fee on each rental.
How to validate a mobile app idea before you build it
Validate an app idea by proving that a specific group of people has the problem, pays to solve it today and will switch to you, before you write production code. CB Insights found poor product-market fit behind 43 percent of the 385 shut-down VC-backed startups whose failure reasons could be identified (from 431 it tracked). Running out of capital topped the list at 70 percent, but CB Insights calls that the final cause rather than the root one. A few weeks of interviews and a landing page cost far less than a mid-tier build, which starts at $75,000.
The same test applies to startup app ideas and to a new product inside an established business. A practical sequence that takes weeks, not months:
- Name the user and the job. "Independent physical therapists who assign home exercises" is testable. "Health-conscious people" is not.
- Find the current workaround. Spreadsheets, group chats, paper and a competitor's clunky app are all evidence of demand. No workaround usually means no pain.
- Interview 15 to 20 people in the segment. Ask what they did last time the problem happened and what it cost them. Do not pitch.
- Run a smoke test. A landing page with the promise, a price and a waitlist or pre-order button. Measure sign-ups from targeted traffic, not from friends.
- Prototype the one screen that matters. A clickable prototype of the core action (the voice note becoming a job, the receipt becoming an expense) tells you more than a feature list.
- Check platform rules early. Read the relevant App Review Guidelines for payments, subscriptions and health before you design pricing. A subscription must deliver ongoing value; digital features must use in-app purchase8.
- Model unit economics. Store fees, payment fees, support and maintenance at 15 to 20 percent of the build cost a year. CB Insights found unsustainable unit economics behind 19 percent of the failed startups it analyzed12.
| Signal | Build it | Rethink it |
|---|---|---|
| Current workaround | Users pay for or hack together a fix today | Nobody does anything about the problem |
| Interviews | Most describe a recent, specific incident and its cost | Answers are hypothetical ("I would probably") |
| Smoke test | Targeted visitors join a paid waitlist or pre-order | Visitors read, do not act |
| Why mobile | Camera, sensors, location or on-device AI are core | A website would do the same job |
| Unit economics | Price covers store fees, support and upkeep | Margin depends on scale you cannot reach |
| Rules and data | Compliance path is clear and budgeted | Model relies on selling or sharing sensitive data |
If the idea survives, the next step is a minimum viable product: the smallest release that lets real users complete the core job so you can measure retention and willingness to pay. That is the work our MVP development team does for founders.
What it costs to build a mobile app idea
Most first releases of these ideas cost $30,000 to $200,000, and the complex ones $200,000 to $500,000 or more, using the tiers in our mobile app cost guide. Clutch's verified client reviews show the most common mobile project at $10,000 to $49,999 and an average of $90,780 over about 11 months. Plan another 15 to 20 percent of the build cost each year for maintenance.
| Tier | Range | What it typically covers |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | $30,000 to $75,000 | Focused features, standard UI, one platform, basic backend |
| Mid | $75,000 to $200,000 | Custom UI, real backend, integrations, both platforms |
| Complex | $200,000 to $500,000+ | Real-time, AI, high scale, security and compliance work |
| Measure | Source | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Most common mobile project size | Clutch, Sep 2026 | $10,000 to $49,999 |
| Simple tier | Resourcifi cost guide, 2026 | $30,000 to $75,000 |
| Mid tier | Resourcifi cost guide, 2026 | $75,000 to $200,000 |
| Complex tier | Resourcifi cost guide, 2026 | $200,000 to $500,000+ |
| Average mobile project (about 11 months) | Clutch, Sep 2026 | $90,780 |
Why the gap between Clutch's most common project and our tiers? Clutch's figure is drawn from verified client reviews of mobile projects of every size, at firms most commonly billing $25 to $49 an hour2. Our tiers describe a production release with design, QA and release work included. Both are useful: Clutch tells you what the market transacts; the tiers tell you what a first release of these ideas usually needs. Our full mobile app development cost breakdown explains how scope turns into hours.
What moves an idea up a tier:
- Two native codebases. Clutch notes that separate native iOS and Android apps double cost because each needs its own code. A cross-platform framework can keep simple and mid ideas in their tier.
- Features Clutch flags as cost drivers. In-app purchases, push notifications, shopping carts and wearable compatibility all add build time2.
- Money movement and regulated data. Bank links, payments between users, clinical data and identity checks put ideas 11, 14, 18, 20 and 25 in the complex tier.
- A cloud fallback for AI. On-device AI is free per call but not on every phone. A server fallback for older devices adds backend work and a running cost.
Then add what happens after launch. Maintenance runs 15 to 20 percent of the build cost a year in our guide1: a $120,000 mid-tier build means roughly $18,000 to $24,000 a year for updates, OS releases and infrastructure. Store fees come off revenue, not the budget, but they belong in the model:
| Store | What is charged | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | Paid apps and in-app purchases, Small Business Program (new or under $1M prior-year proceeds) | 15 percent |
| Google Play (US, from June 30, 2026) | Auto-renewing subscriptions, first $1M of annual earnings | 10 percent plus 5 percent billing fee |
| Google Play (markets not yet on the new schedule) | Most purchases for developers enrolled in the 15 percent tier, first $1M a year / above $1M7 | 15 percent / 30 percent |
| Apple App Store | Physical goods and services consumed outside the app | Not sold through in-app purchase; use Apple Pay or card entry |
On $100,000 of first-year subscription revenue, a 15 percent fee is $15,000. That is small next to the build, but it changes whether a $2.99 monthly price covers support.
