White label SEO for agencies: how it works and how to choose a partner
White label SEO for agencies means a partner does the SEO work while your agency sells it under your own brand, sets the price and keeps the client. Against the $3,199 monthly average in Clutch's SEO pricing guide (updated September 2026), a 2x markup on a wholesale package leaves a 50% gross margin. The client should still own every account, and your agency answers for the partner's methods.

The short version
- White label SEO is wholesale SEO under your brand. A partner does the work, you sell it, price it and own the client relationship. Google's hiring guide still holds the site owner responsible for what any SEO vendor does.
- Retail prices set your ceiling. Clutch's pricing guide (updated September 2026) puts the average SEO project at $3,199 a month, with most SEO agencies billing $100 to $149 an hour. A 2x markup on wholesale leaves 50%, 1.5x leaves 33%.
- One hire costs about two retainers. O*NET's 2025 median wage for the occupation that includes search marketing strategists (market research analysts and marketing specialists) is $78,760 a year, about $6,563 a month before benefits.
- The client owns every account. Google's Business Profile policies say end customers keep ownership or co-ownership at all times and must be able to regain exclusive control within 7 business days of giving notice.
- GEO is now part of the offer. Alphabet says Google's AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users in 2026, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, so crawler access and AI visibility reporting belong in scope.
What white label SEO for agencies is, and how the model works
White label SEO for agencies is a wholesale arrangement: a partner does the SEO work, your agency sells it under your own brand, sets the client price and keeps the relationship. The client sees your name on the proposal, the reports and the calls. The partner works behind you, and the gap between what you charge and what the partner charges is your margin.
You sell and scope the engagement. The partner audits the site, runs technical fixes, produces content and handles local listings, usually against a monthly package. Reports go out under your logo and your account manager presents them.
If you want to offer SEO without hiring an SEO team, this is the usual route. You rent a bench instead of building one. It fits web design, paid media and brand agencies whose clients keep asking for organic search, and full-service agencies that need overflow or a specialism such as local SEO.
Responsibility does not move. Google tells site owners they are ultimately responsible for the actions of any companies they hire.1 Your client carries that risk and will hold you to it, not the partner, so everything below about ownership, methods and reporting is about protecting your name.
What a white label SEO partner delivers: technical, content, local, links and GEO
A full white label SEO service covers technical SEO, content, local SEO, link acquisition and, increasingly, visibility in AI answers (GEO or AEO). Your agency keeps strategy, the client conversation and final approval. Google's own list of useful services from an SEO provider runs from site reviews and technical advice to content development, keyword research and optimizing for generative AI.1
| Workstream | Partner delivers | Agency keeps | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Audit, crawl and index fixes, redirects, speed, structured data | Priorities, dev scheduling with the client | Fixes that need client developers and never ship |
| Content | Keyword research, briefs, drafts, on-page updates | Brand voice, subject expert input, sign-off | Commodity articles written at volume |
| Local SEO | Business Profile upkeep, citations, review response workflow | Client consent, profile ownership, fee disclosure | Partner taking ownership of the profile |
| Links and digital PR | Outreach, earned mentions, broken link recovery | Approval of targets and methods | Paid links, link swaps, automated links |
| GEO and AEO | AI crawler checks, answer-first pages, AI visibility tracking | Which prompts and topics matter | Hacks sold as special AI optimization |
| Reporting | Branded dashboards, monthly summaries | The narrative and next month's plan | Reports that hide raw data |
- Technical SEO earns trust fastest because the output is checkable: a crawl, an issue list, a change log.
- Content is where quality slips first. Google says content people find unique, compelling and useful will likely influence visibility in its AI search in the long run more than any other suggestion in its guide, and it separates commodity content built on common knowledge from expert, first-hand takes.2
- Local SEO suits a white label model because the work repeats across locations. White label local SEO services also touch AI search: Google says Business Profiles can help products and services show in AI responses as well as other results, and its third-party policies set strict rules for anyone managing a profile for a client.25
- Links carry the most risk. Google's spam policies name buying or selling links for ranking, excessive link exchanges and automated link programs as link spam.3 If a package promises a fixed number of links a month, ask how they are obtained.
Pricing and margin models for reselling SEO
Clutch's pricing guide (updated September 2026) puts the average SEO project at $3,199 a month, with most SEO agencies on Clutch billing $100 to $149 an hour. Those are retail prices. As a white label SEO reseller you buy wholesale from the partner, and your margin depends on the markup: 2x leaves 50%, 1.5x leaves about 33%.
Clutch's location table suggests one source of wholesale margin: average cost per hour is $100 to $149 for SEO agencies in the United States, $50 to $99 in Poland and below $25 in India.6
The comparison that matters is against a hire. O*NET's 2025 median wage for the occupation covering search marketing strategists is $78,760 a year, about $6,563 a month before benefits, tools and management.7 On our arithmetic, that one wage absorbs about two average retainers at zero margin. White label wins until steady SEO revenue can keep a specialist fully booked.
| Measure | Source | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Average monthly SEO project | Clutch, Sep 2026 | $3,199 |
| Two average projects (our arithmetic) | Clutch, Sep 2026 | $6,398 |
| One in-house wage ($78,760 / 12) | O*NET, 2025 | $6,563 |
The table runs the common resale models on sample numbers. The markups, wholesale prices, fee and hourly rates are our illustrative inputs, not market data.
| Model | How it works | Worked example | Gross margin | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed markup on a package | Partner sells a monthly package; you set retail | $3,200 retail, 2x markup, $1,600 wholesale | $1,600, 50% | Repeatable packages for similar clients |
| Thin markup, volume play | Low markup to win on price | $3,200 retail, 1.25x markup, $2,560 wholesale | $640, 20% | Only if account management is light |
| Premium markup | Your strategy carries much of the price | $3,200 retail, 3x markup, $1,067 wholesale | $2,133, 67% | You add real strategy, not just a logo |
| Pass-through plus fee | Partner cost at cost, plus your strategy and reporting fee | $1,600 partner cost plus a $400 fee, $2,000 to the client | $400, 20% | Clients who want transparency; multi-location work |
| Hourly resale | Partner bills hours; you resell at your rate | 20 hours at $75 wholesale is $1,500, resold at $125 an hour for $2,500 | $1,000, 40% | Audits, migrations, one-off projects |
Gross margin equals one minus one divided by the markup, before your own account management time. SEO is also slow. Clutch reports a 12-month typical timeline, and Google tells site owners to ask any SEO what results to expect and in what timeframe.61 Set a minimum term that covers the months before results show, or churn will eat the margin you planned.
White label is the wrong call in three cases: SEO is your core product, you have enough steady SEO revenue to keep specialists fully booked, or nobody at your agency can read an audit and challenge a link report.
How reporting and client ownership work
The client, or your agency on the client's behalf, should own every account: Search Console, analytics, the Business Profile, the domain and the content. The partner gets user access, never ownership, and reports go out under your brand from data the client can see directly. Google's Business Profile rules require end customers to keep ownership or co-ownership at all times.
| Asset | Owner | Partner access | Rule or reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Client as verified owner; agency as delegated owner | Full user, or restricted user for an audit | Google suggests read access only at audit stage |
| Business Profile | Client, with the agency as co-owner or manager | Manager, with the owner's consent | End customers keep ownership or co-ownership |
| Analytics, tag manager | Client | Read or edit role, not administrator | Administration stays with the client |
| Domain, hosting, CMS | Client | Scoped CMS login, no registrar access | The domain is the business asset |
| Content and earned links | Client, assigned in your contract | Work for hire through your agency | Stays with the site if the partner leaves |
| Reporting dashboard | Agency | Feeds data in; branding is yours | The client relationship lives here |
In Search Console, an owner has full control, every property needs at least one verified owner, and when you remove an owner you should delete their verification tokens or they can re-verify later.4 Google's Business Profile third-party policies name third-party SEO companies explicitly. The business decides whether a partner gets co-owner, manager or no access, and must be able to regain exclusive control within 7 business days of giving notice. A management fee must be disclosed in writing along with the fact that Business Profile is provided at no extra cost, and keeping a profile hostage for money is prohibited.5
Reporting keeps the arrangement honest. Brand the dashboard, not the data: reports carry your logo, but the numbers should come from sources the client can open, such as Search Console. Report AI visibility separately, starting with the Generative AI performance report Google points site owners to in Search Console.2 Pew found users clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1%, so rankings and sessions alone now undercount visibility.8 And ship a change log, since Google tells site owners to ask whether an SEO will share every change it makes and the reasoning.1
How to choose a white label SEO partner: checklist and red flags
Choose on evidence you can check: references from agencies like yours, a sample audit, a written account of how links and content are produced, a clean ownership model and a report you would put your logo on. Walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings, claims a special relationship with Google or will not explain their methods. Google's own hiring guidance names those warning signs.
| Check | Ask for | Good answer | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Track record | Agency references, a sample audit | Contacts you can call; an audit with priorities and effort | Ranking screenshots with no context |
| Methods | How links and content are produced | Outreach, earned mentions, expert-led content | Link counts per month, bulk articles |
| Guarantees | Expected results and timeframe | Ranges tied to the site's condition | Guaranteed first place or a special relationship with Google |
| Ownership | Who holds each account | Client owns everything; partner is a user | Accounts created in the partner's name |
| Transparency | Monthly change log | Every change, with the reason | Results reported, actions never listed |
| White label hygiene | Brand-free files, non-solicit clause | No direct client contact without you | Partner branding in documents or footers |
| Local compliance | Business Profile process | Owner consent, fee disclosure, every change reported | Profiles held until an invoice is paid |
| AI search | Their GEO approach | Matches Google's published guidance; checks AI crawlers | Secret AI hacks or claims of internal Google data |
| Exit | Offboarding terms | Access removed, files and content handed over | Content or links that vanish when you stop paying |
The guarantee and secrecy red flags come almost word for word from Google. Its hiring guide says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, warns against anyone claiming a "special relationship" with Google or a "priority submit", and says to be careful if a company is secretive. It adds that third-party SEO tools have no access to Google's internal ranking data.1 Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings, however they are made.3 A partner selling content by the hundred pages is selling that risk to your client under your name.
There is no single best white label SEO company; the best fit is the partner that passes this checklist on a pilot. Run that pilot on one real client brief and rank candidates on audit quality, response speed, and whether the first report needed rewriting. The logic matches our comparison of staff augmentation and outsourcing: decide who directs the work before you decide who does it.
Adding GEO and AEO to your white label SEO offer
GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) mean making a client's content easy for AI systems to find, trust and cite. Google says that from its side this is still SEO, because its AI features rest on its core ranking systems. The practical add-ons are AI crawler access, answer-first content with a real point of view, clean local data and separate AI visibility reporting.
Alphabet said in July 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users and that AI features in Search send billions of clicks to websites every week.9 Clients will ask whether they appear there.
- Crawler access. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that its search and training crawlers are separate robots.txt settings.10 Check every client's robots.txt and firewall rules first. AI crawl access is also part of our generative engine optimization service.
- Eligibility. Google says that to be eligible to show in its generative AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.2 Technical SEO is the entry ticket.
- Non-commodity content. Answer the question in the first lines, then add the data and first-hand detail a summary of other pages cannot supply.
- Local and product data. Google says Business Profiles and Merchant Center feeds help products and services appear in AI responses.2
- Reporting. Track a fixed set of prompts the client's buyers ask, next to Search Console's Generative AI performance report.
What not to promise for Google: Google lists llms.txt files, "chunking" content, rewriting just for AI, chasing inauthentic mentions and special schema as things site owners can ignore for Google Search. Google says llms.txt files are fine to keep for other services that use them, and it still recommends structured data as part of overall SEO. It also says mass-producing pages for every fan-out query to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.2 For the wider shift, see our operating model for AI in marketing.
